5 Social Skills That Schools Must teach!

Learning social skills is an important aspect of our overall education, for it teaches us to sustain in board spectrum. Schools play an important role in teaching social skills to students, and here are a few ways in which schools do so:

  1. 1. Teaches kids to be Self-reliant and Disciplined – There is a certain ruleset of a school, one must come time and do their homework and classwork themselves and take part in a lot of self-reliant activities. This makes your kid take up his responsibility from a young age inculcating self-reliance as a habit throughout his entire life. Besides the pedagogy of the schools teaches them moral values like orderliness, which are essential for a disciplined life. Such activities and learnings shape your kid to be a better human being.

  2. 2. Create a Holistic approach towards life – In schools your kid has to co-study with kids from different backgrounds, with diverse languages and cultures. Sharing space with a variety of same-aged kids, develop a liberal mindset in them. They will be motivated to cultivate a holistic approach towards life: the real essence of education.

  3. 3. Make them adaptable to situations – Schools these days teach students to act according to situations. They teach them about the difference between ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’ and classes about self-defense and tactics to deal with difficult situations. A major drawback of the old-school Indian education system was the low student-teacher ratio, emphasis only on the hoary-making system, and less importance on developing communication skills in students. The picture is quite evolved now with a higher student-teacher ratio which motivated students to communicate more with teachers. Students now learn new concepts, clear their confusion easily with better communication which reinforces their understanding.

  4. 4. Teach the importance of Self-awareness and Mental wellbeing - Schools today apart from imparting traditional education engage students in numerous extracurricular activities like camping, interschool competition, social utility projects, team projects, and lots more. These activities teach them to understand their self-aura; their likes and dislikes. Self-realization is an important aspect of mental wellbeing. The more they understand themselves, the more will they be able to deal with the complexities of life. Moreover, every school kid has to juggle between school-work, extracurricular activities and maintaining a social life which prepares them for main the “perfect work-life balance” in future.

  5. 5. Teach students financial Literacy – We all learn our calculating skills in school, while economics and social science taught us the intricacies of the financial world. However, the modern-day math and economics curriculum have evolved a lot. Now they aim to teach kids more real-life calculation skills like calculating interest, how expenses on credit cards and loans can be managed, the concepts of selling price and buying price, inflation, and deflation, how to make a budget, the intricacies of filing a taxes, GST and such other.

The pandemic though created many cataclysms in our lives but has also taught us the importance of survival skills. As we stayed quarantined indoors we understood the importance of many tasks we were ignoring till then. With the vaccination being done initiating our journey back to normalcy, we should be keen on teaching the essential life skills to our kids. However, as kids spend a major part of their day in schools, they have a bigger contribution in teaching children essential life skills that will ensure them a better brighter future.
