Pep talk by Lt. Gen C R Sampath Kumar

School time is:

The best time of one’s life.
The basis of one’s life foundation.
A place where children can be at their best-be it fun and games, studies, co-curricular activities or any other talents that they have.

Lt. Gen. C R Sampath Kumar, a retired army man, a war veteran, Retd. Defense Secretary to the President of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma; and winner of various awards including the Visisht Seva Medal and Param Visisht Seva Medal for his meritorious and distinguished service in the army. He was a special invitee to JHS, to give a motivational talk to students of grades 7 & 9. This program was held in the school, between 4:00 to 5:00 pm on 26.11.2009.

Lt. Gen. C R Sampath Kumar started his talk with reference to Swami Vivekananda. He said the Swami had always a soft corner for youth. He had given a clarion call to the young of the country-Arise, Awake, Rest Not Till Your Goal Is Reached.

Though what Swami Vivekananda said was a very long time ago, it still held relevance today. Giving examples from his own life, the General said that each of us, students especially, should listen to their heart and head. The heart tells us what we like, and the head tells us what we should do. This together tells us where our inclination lies. Our parents, teachers, and elders generally push us into careers or professions we are least inclined to. We have to decide where our aptitude is, in what field we will do best, where our heart lies, what makes us happy. Our jobs should be fun, and then it will not seem burdensome.

He also said to be able to do well; we need to have commitment that is deeper than the oceans and ambition that is higher than the sky. This way we will shine as bright as the sun in our professions.

Lt. Gen. C R Sampath Kumar gave 3 mantras for success.
Humility
Sense of listening
Sense of humor

With these three, he said no one could ever go wrong. Lt. Gen. C R Sampath Kumar peppered his one hour talk with anecdotes from his life as the Defense Secretary to the President of India, his personal life and professional career.

Everyone enjoyed his motivational talk. Lt. Gen. C R Sampath Kumar enlivened the evening with lots of laughter from both the students and faculty. He enlightened us about how to be successful and happy and count our blessings.
